My first "workshop"....

A friend of mine from High School has started up a photography club and he asked me to come do a portrait workshop for them. We met at a local refuge and I began rambling about everything I know about portrait work, I know that I probably overloaded them with info, but hopefully they retain some of what I went over and they are better photographers from it.
One thing I did go over was my passion for photography. I tried to impress upon them the responsibility they have as photographers. To be able to take these moments, capture them and preserve them for years to come for people.
You dont want to be asked or paid to capture theses moments and fail to do so in a manner that will allow them to take the pictures out years from now and laugh, cry or just be able to sit there and enjoy the memories the images bring up. The portrait you take today could be the last picture they have of a loved one after an untimely death. The images from the next wedding you shoot could be the only images that a relative that was to sick to attend or to far away to come will ever see. Being a photographer is not about how fancy a camera you have but being able to live up to the responsibility of preserving someones special moments.

I have been watching some videos.....

A lot of videos actually, lol. And the one thing they all hit on is defining who you are as a photographer. To look at your images and see if you can tell what makes your images special. So I did just that. I took some time to look at my images and see what my style is and see if I could point to the things that make my images unique. Here is what I came up with. 1. I like to keep my images simple. I don't like cluttered backgrounds. 2. I dislike blown out skies so I use flash a lot out doors. 3. I dislike using textures and selective coloring. I want my images to stand out on their own with out a lot of effects. 4. I love black and whites & vignettes. 5. I shoot a lot in portrait orientation, probably 90% of the time. 6. I dislike shooting with a tilt. 7. I like my images to be contrasty. 8. I like longer focal lengths, I use my 85mm 1.8 a lot for portraits and here recently I have been using my 70-210mm f4 a lot. 9. Its crazy...

I know this is supposed to be my photography blog, but I have been to pre occupied with the loss of my bestest pal to do much shooting. Today I was out in the yard with Bella, our other chihuahua, and the neighbors came out and asked about Charlie.  They were upset that he didn't make it. They told me how he made their day when he was outside and would bark at them.
